Sunday School lesson February 22

This lesson is taken from Matthew 26:36-46 NIV Bible. We find Jesus on Thursday, he has just had The Last Supper with the disciples, now only 11 because Judas has left the upper room. Jesus took the 11 disciples to a quiet place called Gethsemane and told them to sit for a while because he needed to pray. He took Peter, James and John with Him, He sought companionship and support, He needed them to pray and support him; he was sorrowful and troubled( note the human aspect of Jesus he felt joy, pain, anger and sorrow just like us) He asked the three to stay here and keep watch( note these were the same three disciples that witnessed the transfigured state of Jesus a few lessons back). He went a little farther and fell with His face to the ground and prayed" My Father, if it is possible, may this cup be taken from me. Yet not as I will, but as you will." The cup that he is talking about is the separation from God, His Father, and the isolation from His Father. Jesus defeated Satan in the garden when he made the decision to move forward. He knew he faced the physical pain of crucifixion, but he also knew on the cross he would bear the sins of the World. He returned to the disciples and found them sleeping! When we don't read God's word we are also guilty of "sleeping" We must watch and pray so we do not fall into temptation, because our body is weak. Jesus prayed the same prayer 3 times and 3 times he found His disciples sleeping, they failed Him in His most desperate hour. God's plan for our salvation went through the cross and The Father enabled Jesus to carry out this plan. Jesus promised " I will never leave you" He is always there for us if we accept the free gift of salvation
that He paid in full by going to the cross. No one took Jesus' life from Him, He laid it down in obedience to His Father's command. Are you willing to be obedient?

Sunday School lesson February 15,2009

We find Jesus in the last week of his life on earth in human form. The chief priest had gathered together to plot to arrest and kill Jesus, but because of the great crowds that had gathered for the Feast of the Passover, they decided to wait. They feared the people would riot but the time had come and just like the Passover lambs were sacrificed so would the Lamb of God be sacrificed. Jesus was in the house of Simon the leper( Simon had been healed by Jesus and wanted to fellowship with Jesus) While in Simon's house Mary came in with an expensive jar of perfume, which she poured on Jesus' head. Mary understood what was about to happen so she set about the task to anoint Jesus' body for His burial. Mary gave her all by sacrificing financially( the expensive bottle of perfume) her generous act of loyalty and she showed her love because she risked her reputation by entering a room filled with only men, this is something only a morally-loose woman would do. During this time period to anoint a person's head was a great honor for the recipient. The disciples saw what she had done and became very angry because they saw it wasteful to pour the perfume on Jesus. Their excuse was the perfume could have been sold and the money given to the poor. Jesus hear this and replied to them that" they would always have the poor, but you will not always have me." They still did not fully understand that
everything was about to come true just as He had been teaching them. Then one of the Twelve went to the chief priest and asked what are you willing to give me if I hand him over to you? You have to remember Judas was hand picked by Jesus, he was the treasurer and had a weakness for money. Judas, just like us today had a choice to make but God knew what he would do and that he would never ask for forgiveness. The other eleven disciples refer to Jesus as Lord meaning My Savior but notice Judas called Him Rabbi, meaning teacher. Judas never accepted the free gift of the Lord just like many still do not. We should try to be more like Mary, she gave because she adored Jesus. Her generosity was measured by her heart when she gave. When our heart is in the right place, Jesus knows our motives. We can show compassion and our hearts will become soft and we can see people as God sees and loves each one of us.

In Memory of Norma

I have thought of Norma a lot this week, she turned 55, the double nickle!!!! WE shared so many memories, life was not always fair, but we shared life lessons, sister lessons, we shared laughter, we shared stories of our childhood and of our children. Most of all we shared tears of joy and of sorrow, we shared a journey that was traveled for a while hand and hand and for a time trying to make our way back to each other. Thanks for the memories, Love, Ann

The Mountaintop Experience

Today, February 1st lesson is from Matthew 17: 1-13. We find Jesus knowing he had to strengthen the three disciples', Peter, James and John for the terrible days ahead so he took them up on the mountain( Mount Hermon) At the top of the mountain Jesus transfigured or changes into His glorified state. Jesus' face glowed with the brilliance of the sun, His clothes became as white as the light. The disciples' then confirmed that Jesus was the Christ, the Son of the Living God. Standing with Jesus was Moses and Elijah and the disciples' heard them talking about His impending death. Moses represented the Law and Elijah represented the Prophets and the three of them together fulfilled the old covenant, with Jesus the Messiah that was promised in the Old Testament. Peter didn't understand because he wanted to build shelter for the three of them( Peter made the mistake of putting Moses and Elijah on the same level as God when he wanted to build each of them a shelter) They heard God speak: "This is my Son, whom I love; with Him I am well pleased." This is only the second time they hear from God, the first was after Jesus' baptism and now on the mountain top when he said the same thing. When God was speaking the disciples fell to the ground, they were terrified. But Jesus touched them and said" Do not be afraid" When they looked up they only saw Jesus, their friend that was dressed in a simple tunic, smiling at them. We need to not worry about religion but instead have a personal relationship with Christ. Do you remember the last time you had a Mountain top experience?
